Help choosing bangles.
Selection of bangles by Laura of Notting Val

Have to admit that I love bangles. Love making them, love wearing them.
It is great that you can wear several different sizes and patterns together and even if they don't match, the co
mbination usually looks great.

What else do I like about them ?

  • The way they jangle
  • Fiddle-factor

Their large surface area is great for patterns and figurative work. (so much of jewellery is just too small !)

So go ahead and choose one (or more) for yourself or your friends.

kiln fused glass and sterling silver hinged bangle

Cuff bangle and closed bangleSterling silver and etched brass bangle by Laura McDonagh of Notting Val Ltd.

  • Hinged ? What width ?
  • Complete shape or "cuff" (has an opening) ?
  • If complete, need size as they may not get a smaller one on.(remember the critical measurement is not the actual wrist, but across their knuckles as they 'make a fist' as a closed bangle (not a cuff) has to get across this area)
  • Do they wear their bangles tight or loose on their wrist ?
  • If they have tiny wrists but big hands the closed bangle that will fit over their hand may look huge, and a cuff may look neater.

More risky than bracelets for a surprise gift if you don't know the size :

Changing the size once it has been made :

If you are unsure of the size when you are ordering, contact me and I will advise you on how easy it would be to alter later. The following are guidelines :

A cuff is usually easier to alter to fit after it has been made than a complete bangle.

Altering the size and then finishing off again usually requires that the bangle is heated.

There will be a small charge for this alteration and redoing the finish e.g. gold plated or oxidised.

If there is a continuous pattern around the bangle it may look fine if stretched a bit to make it slightly bigger, but may not look as good if the size has to be reduced as a piece has to be cut out and the bangle soldered again. (In many cases it will be fine but is worth thinking of).

If a bangle has been enamelled it can't be altered without redoing all the enameling. This would be expensive for you and therefore worth avoiding if possible !

If stones have been set in the bangle, it can only be stretched if the stones are first removed, so this will be an extra cost.
